The 11th Annual Lantern Parade will be held on Saturday the 24th of June this year.
Though it is one of the coldest times of year, the festival attracts around 10,000 people to Belgrave to gather together and celebrate as a community for Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year.

Just as the years before, there will be hundreds of lanterns parading up & down the main street, accompanied by drummers, dancers, local musicians and performers of all sorts. There’s also a lineup of fabulous performances and events before and after the Parade, including the beautiful Parade
Village in Hayes Carpark, with big lantern teepees to gather and get cosy in, hot food stalls from local traders, fire pits, and music into the night.

The road is closed from 5:00pm – 7:30pm (so make sure your car is moved from
Hayes Carpark, Blacksmith’s Way or along Burwood Hwy in time!), but come early as there is entertainment from 4pm and a buzz in the street in anticipation.

2017’s Lantern Parade will be slightly different – it will be a FLAME FREE event.
Each year local artists run workshops so that people can learn to build their own lanterns, providing everything you need to build simple, intermediate or advanced lanterns – including lighting! If you can’t make it along to one of the weekend workshops, you can always find electric candles, LED light strips or fairy lights to add to your own beautiful lanterns you make at home.
The upcoming Lantern Making Workshops are as follows:
• Saturday 3 June, 10am-1pm
Simple and Intermediate;
• Sunday 4 June, 10am-2pm
• Saturday 5 June, 10am-1pm;
• Sunday 11 June, 10am-1pmFree community workshop
(making super simple gorgeous
balloon lanterns); and
• Saturday 17 June, 10am-1pm

Simple and Intermediate.
If you are a community group with a big idea, you can book a team of experienced lantern artists to come and run a 3-4 hour workshop at reasonable rates to make sure the lantern you want in the parade is just as spectacular as your group desires!

Check the website for detailed descriptions of workshops. Workshops can be booked by visiting the trybooking page at

This year we are looking for you, our wonderful community, to come forward and volunteer to help the festival happen, contributing in whatever ways you are able to! There are many different roles and the more volunteers we have, the smoother everything runs. Fill in the volunteer form on our website!
