Mount Burnett Observatory, our local community run observatory, is very excited to announce that they will be hosting the Victorian Astronomical Convention this year. What is VASTROC all about?
Let Perry Vlahos tell you all about… VASTROC 2017
No, it’s not another music festival but rather a festival of astronomy – the Victorian Astronomical Convention, to be exact.
Victorian astronomers can be divided over many things; reflector vs refractor, imaging or visual, Dobsonian vs Schmidt-Cassegrain, the Blues or the Bombers! However, for over 25 years now they
have united for one event which brings them all harmoniously together in joyous celebration – VASTROC.
In 2017 it will be hosted by the Mount Burnett Observatory (MBO) on the weekend of 5-7 May at Emerald Secondary College, 425 Belgrave-Gembrook Road in Emerald, Victoria.
Full accommodation can be provided nearby with a variety of prices and packages. Visitors from interstate are most welcome too.
Held bi-annually, this celestial shindig gives the members of astronomical associations, in Victoria and also anyone with an interest in astronomy, an opportunity to get together with like minded individuals over the course of a weekend.
It will feature lectures by well-known astronomers, workshops, poster papers, ‘How to…’ sessions for beginners on various topics, the latest in imaging plus much, much more. And, don’t forget the stimulating conversation in the breaks with plenty of food and drinks, to boot. Speaking of food and drink, the Saturday night VASTROC dinner is legendary!
VASTROC is an exciting event where you can pick the brains of the experts and find out how they do it. There’ll also be a Q&A forum where a multitude of astronomical topics will be addressed.
Don’t miss this fun-filled weekend of full-on astronomy, because there’ll not be another VASTROC until the earth has orbited the sun twice more!
